Foreigners who are granted a visa to stay in Spain for a period exceeding six months must apply for a foreigner identity card at the corresponding Provincial Brigade of Immigration and Borders dependent on the Ministry of the Interior, within one month from the date of arrival. Foreigner identity cards are not required to holders of visas issued to carry out seasonal work.
Foreigners having a relation with Spain for economic, professional or social interests shall be provided with a personal, unique and exclusive sequential number, for identification purposes.
Consequently, foreigners having a relation with Spain for economic, professional or social interests may personally apply for an NIE at the Directorate-General of the Police, either directly or through Spain’s Consular Posts abroad.
To get the NIE, you can fill out a relevant form and personally go to the General Police Department or to the Spanish Consulate abroad, make an appointment and explain the reason for the request in an interview then simply get your NIE.
